What is the Ocean Connector Program?

The program is part mentor and part career coach and designed to assist individuals who are seeking new opportunities in ocean conservation or sustainability through a series of strategy sessions and personalized action plans. The 6-8 week program includes:

+ four one-on-one virtual sessions with Carolynn every other week

+ each session covers different skills and tools, and includes individualized exercises

+ each week, you will be provided with action plans that summarizes tasks (“homework” to help reach personal and professional goals

+ Carolynn will be available to answer questions and discuss ideas over email during program

As a recent graduate, I was struggling to find work that felt fulfilling and impactful. I had goals of influencing policy and researching microplastics, but I did not know how to move forward. Carolynn taught me how to take control of my career and craft it with confidence. Because of the Ocean Connector Program, I have a job with my regional Water Board, a growing network of researchers and agencies throughout California, and resources that keep me connected to current events and seminars in my field. Carolynn crafted this entire program to fit my needs, and it has marked a pivotal point in my career. Thank you, Carolynn! I am forever grateful.

About Carolynn Box

Carolynn Box has always had a strong pull to ocean conservation and made opportunities happen for herself, starting with an undergraduate internship with the United States Geological Survey where she worked on coral reef mapping in Hawaii. This opportunity was the beginning of her ocean conservation career that includes a mix of experience at government agencies, NGOs, and companies. After grad school, Carolynn eventually got the job she was trying to get, working for the state agency that controls development around San Francisco Bay. It was somewhere around this time that she learned how important networking can be at helping to advance your career - and she loves doing it!

After seven years working to protect the Bay, Carolynn realized she wanted more adventure in her career and began her journey to explore new options. Through building her network she was able to join a 33-day Ocean Research Expedition with 5 Gyres (from Namibia to Uruguay). Here she realized that her passion for ocean conservation could be mixed with adventure, plus the adventure made others pay more attention to the issue! Many colleagues questioned the decision of quitting a well respected coastal agency job. But it was one of the best decision of her life. She then spent eight years running expeditions, setting up new programs, connecting with plastic pollution researchers & activists around the world, and carrying out cutting edge science.

Through the work she has done over the last 20 years, especially the last 10 years, Carolynn has a strong ocean positive network that includes leaders, innovators, scientists, policy makers, and artists with a range of expertise. She loves to make connections and help make new ideas happen!
